How to dictate in Google Docs — two ways
Google's built-in voice typing is free and good inside Docs. A system-wide Mac app works in Docs and everywhere else. Here is how to use each, and when to pick which.

Method one: Google's voice typing
- Open the document in Chrome, Edge or Safari Google lists those three. Other browsers will not show the feature.
- Tools → Voice typing Or Cmd+Shift+S. A microphone panel appears at the side of the document.
- Click the microphone and allow access The browser asks once per site.
- Speak, including the punctuation "Full stop", "comma", "new paragraph". Google also understands formatting commands such as "bold" and "new line".
- Click the microphone again to stop It also stops on its own after a pause.
It is free, it handles a very wide range of languages, and for long-form writing inside Docs it is genuinely good. If that is all you need, you are finished.
Method two: a system-wide Mac app
- Open the document in any browser The browser stops mattering, because the dictation is not coming from the page.
- Click where you want the text As with typing.
- Hold your shortcut, speak a paragraph, release The text appears at the cursor and Docs autosaves it like anything typed.
- Read it back, then carry on Same discipline as anywhere else.
Nothing is installed in Docs and nothing needs Google's cooperation. The page receives keystrokes. Which is also why it keeps working when Google changes the editor.

Never both at the same time
If Google's microphone is listening and a dictation app inserts text into the same document, you get interleaved words from two recognisers. It looks like the app is broken and it is not.
Close the voice typing panel before using a system-wide app. This accounts for a large share of "dictation is garbled in Google Docs" reports.

Suggesting mode and comments
Both methods work in suggesting mode — dictated text becomes a suggestion attributed to you, exactly as typed text would. Comments are ordinary text fields too, and a dictated comment tends to explain the reasoning rather than just saying "unclear", which is a real improvement in a shared document.
