Where Google's version is genuinely good

It is free, there is nothing to install, it handles spoken punctuation and formatting commands, and it supports a very wide range of languages. For writing long documents in Google Docs, it is a perfectly good tool and a lot of people never need anything else.

The boundary, precisely

Google's own requirement is that you have a document open in Google Docs in a supported browser. Three consequences follow, and they are the entire reason people look for an alternative:

1. Not in Gmail. Voice typing is a Docs feature. The compose window next door does not have it.
2. Not in the desktop apps. Not in Mail, Slack, Word, Notion, your editor, Messages or a form on any other site.
3. Not outside those browsers. Google lists Chrome, Edge and Safari. Anything else, no.

There is also no offline mode — this is a cloud feature — and no custom vocabulary in the sense a dictation app means it, so the names it gets wrong today it will get wrong next year.

The pattern that makes people switch

It is almost always the same: you get used to speaking a document, then you switch to Gmail to answer three emails and find your hands back on the keyboard. The habit breaks. Dictation that works in one place is a feature; dictation that works everywhere is an input method, and only the second one changes how you work.

Using a Mac dictation app inside Google Docs

It works exactly as it does anywhere else, because the app is typing rather than integrating:

1. Open the document in any browser Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Arc — the browser no longer matters, because the dictation is not coming from the page.
2. Click where you want the text Same as typing.
3. Hold your shortcut and speak Say the punctuation if you want it placed precisely.
4. Release Text lands at the cursor. Docs autosaves it like anything you typed.

Who should stay with Google's

• You write in Docs and almost nowhere else. It is free and it works.
• You need a language a smaller app does not cover. Google's language support is very hard to match.
• You are on a Chromebook or a machine where you cannot install anything.
• You dictate rarely. The boundary only becomes annoying with frequency.
