Dictating in Teams: chats, channels, and the Enter problem
Office's Dictate button lives in Word and Outlook, not in Teams chat. A system-wide Mac dictation app fills the gap, and behaves the same in every part of Teams.

Why Office's Dictate button is not here
Microsoft's dictation feature is documented for the Microsoft 365 authoring apps — Word most prominently. Teams chat is a different surface and does not carry it on the Mac.
Which is fine, because a Mac-level dictation tool covers Teams, Word, Outlook, Slack and everything else with one shortcut. One habit instead of three.
The workflow
- Click into the message box A chat, a channel or a reply thread. All ordinary text fields.
- Hold, speak the message, release One or two sentences is typical for Teams.
- Read it Channel messages go to a lot of people and stay there.
- Press Enter deliberately Or Ctrl+Enter if you have changed the setting — see below.
Formatting
Teams has a formatting toolbar that expands the compose box. The pattern is the same as everywhere: dictate the words, use the toolbar or keyboard for the structure.

Meetings
Two separate things that get confused. Teams has its own live captions and transcription for meetings, which capture everyone. A dictation app captures only you, only while you hold the shortcut, and types the result into a text box.
Where dictation is useful around meetings is the chat during the call — pasting a link with a sentence of context — and the four lines of notes immediately afterwards, while it is still in your head. See meeting notes by voice.
Channels versus chats
Technically identical — both are ordinary text fields — and practically very different, which is worth a sentence because dictation makes it easy to post more, faster.

That last row catches people out. Teams has several compose boxes visible at once, and the text goes wherever the cursor is — which is why clicking into the right box before speaking is the habit that matters most here.
Where it pays in a Teams-heavy organisation
- The considered reply. Teams culture rewards fast short answers, and some questions deserve three paragraphs. Speaking makes the longer answer cost about as much as the short one.
- The handover at the end of your day. Particularly across time zones — see dictation for remote workers.
- Explaining a decision in a channel. The reasoning is what stops the question being asked again next month.

Corporate Macs
A managed Mac may restrict which applications can hold accessibility permission, which is what any dictation app needs in order to type into Teams. If the permission cannot be granted, nothing will work and it is not a bug.
Worth raising with IT rather than working around: on-device dictation is usually an easier approval than a cloud one, because there is no data transfer to assess. Our security note is written to be forwarded.

Questions
Does Microsoft Teams have dictation on Mac?
Not in chat. Microsoft's Dictate feature is documented for the Microsoft 365 authoring apps such as Word. For Teams chat, use macOS's own dictation or a system-wide third-party app.
Does it work in the Teams web app?
Yes, in any browser, because a system-wide app types into the page rather than integrating with Teams.
How do I stop sending messages half-finished?
Change Teams so Enter adds a line break and Ctrl+Enter sends, and choose a dictation shortcut nowhere near Enter. Those two changes remove the problem.
Can I dictate during a meeting?
Yes, into the meeting chat — but mute yourself first, or the call hears you dictating. Teams' own live captions are a separate feature that transcribes everyone.
