Dragon on a Mac: the honest status, and what to use instead

What actually happened

Dragon was, for a long time, the serious answer to dictation — particularly in law, medicine and accessibility, where its accuracy and its deep voice-command vocabulary were genuinely unmatched.

Nuance's own support documentation records Dragon Professional for Mac 6 as end of life effective 22 October 2018, stating that it would no longer provide updates while customers retained a perpetual licence to use the software. There has been no successor for the Mac. Dragon's current line is a Windows product.

What Dragon users will genuinely miss

A page that pretended the modern alternatives are strictly better would be lying. Dragon did several things that today's Mac dictation apps, ours included, do not:

• Deep voice commands. Selecting, correcting and formatting by voice — "select the last sentence", "bold that", "correct word" — was a mature, learnable command language. Modern dictation apps mostly type; they do not operate the document.
• Voice-driven correction. Dragon let you fix a misrecognition by voice and learnt from the fix. Most current apps expect you to correct with the keyboard.
• Speaker profile training. Reading passages to train a personal acoustic model produced real gains for unusual voices. Modern models are speaker-independent, which removes the setup and removes the tailoring.
• Specialist vocabularies. Medical and legal editions shipped with enormous domain dictionaries out of the box.

If voice control of the Mac is what you need rather than voice typing, look at macOS Voice Control. It is built in, free, and designed for exactly that job — it is the closest thing to Dragon's command layer on a modern Mac.

What is better now

• No training. Modern speech models work on your voice immediately. The twenty-minute enrolment reading is gone.
• Accuracy out of the box. Current models handle ordinary speech better untrained than Dragon did trained, on clean audio.
• Works everywhere. System-wide dictation types into any app without a plugin, which Dragon's Mac integration never managed consistently.
• Still on-device. Dragon's local processing was one of its virtues. On-device apps kept that property while gaining the modern models.
• Much cheaper. Dragon Professional was a serious purchase. Current Mac dictation apps run from free to a few tens of pounds.

Where former Dragon users should look

Migrating

1. Write down the twenty words Dragon knew that a general model will not Client names, colleagues, specialist terms. This list is your migration; everything else transfers by itself.
2. Try macOS's free dictation for a week It costs nothing and establishes your baseline.
3. Then try one or two on-device apps Teach each one the twenty words before judging it. Untaught, they will all look worse than Dragon did.
4. Keep the old machine if the command layer was essential If you relied on voice control of documents rather than voice typing, be honest that this is a downgrade, and evaluate macOS Voice Control properly before switching.
